Almost another Sept 11th.

I'm going to try and avoid the whole bs celebration of how no-one has ever suffered like America did on Sept 11th.

Let me tell you, America went away on that day and it never came back. Now I live in a country that thinks it can lie to fight a war, that it can hold people indefinitely without trial, and that in some cases, it's okay for the guys in the white hats to shoot first.

We're becoming what they wanted us to become.
with all this patriotism in the media, i tend to hear acertain set of "patriotic" songs played again and again, usually to promote our red white and blue heritage, and i guess, inspire us to buy for the cause, or something. recently, a jeans commercial played the first three lines of CCR's "Fortunate Son"

Some folks are born
made to wave the flag,
Ooh, they're red, white and blue.

while we stared at young girls' butts and were remineded of how great america is (buy our jeans.) i found it amusing, considering the REST of the lyrics, which i find eerily prophetic of the whole Geo. Bush Jr. thing.

FORTUNATE SON

Words and music by John Fogerty

Some folks are born
made to wave the flag,
Ooh, they're red, white and blue.
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief",
they point the cannon right at you.

It ain't me,
it ain't me.
I ain't no senator's son.
It ain't me,
it ain't me.
I ain't no fortunate one.

Some folks are born
silver spoon in hand,
Lord don't they help themselves.
But when the tax man comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale.

It ain't me,
it ain't me.
I ain't no millionaire's son.
It ain't me,
it ain't me.
I ain't no fortunate one.
Some folks inherit
star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war.
And when you ask them,
"How much should we give?"
They only answer "More! More! More!"

It ain't me,
it ain't me.
I ain't no military son.
It ain't me,
it ain't me.
I ain't no fortunate one.

It ain't me,
it ain't me.
I ain't no Fortunate Son.

Ashcroft says to those concerned over the constitution and legality of recent executive actions:
Your tactics only aid terrorists for they erode our national unity and diminish our resolve.

<sarcasm> yeah, that 4th amendment does get in the way of a good ol fashioned witch hunt. </sarcasm>

what ashcroft doesn't say with his bluster and his grand patriotic bandstanding, is that the constitution and the bill of rights were not created to aid or even assist the government in the execution of thier duties. Instead it exists so that the common man can hold the government accountable for thier actions. Simply because terrorists publish manuals showing how our permissive system can be exloited to thier ends, doesn't mean that we should change or ignore the system of checks and balances in order to hand the reins of power unchecked to Ridge, Bush, and Ashcroft. All of our leaders talk of sacrifice, but it is sacrifice of freedoms that they demand, and they offer no sacrifice or compromise when it comes to achieving thier goal, whatever THAT is... What I demand, as a citizen, is sacrifice of a sure conviction and a swift vengeance in favor of seeing the accused and judging and weighing the evidence in an open hearing. There are doubts in the world as to the legitimacy of these hearings and even the accusations they are based upon. I've already seen our justice system ruin the lives and businesses of several immigrant-americans in the name of this crusade. As an informed citizen, should i be expected to say that all of these other doubts are patently false, even when i am not shown any evidence to the contrary? I want to be sure that in the course of vengeance, we do not do further harm. How can i be sure of that, and have confidence in my leaders, if they simply do not tell me what is going on? Maybe i am getting a little extreme here, but this could easily get too far out of hand, do i dare trust the crownd that brought us the arms race? .... why, next year, the budget may be deemed a matter of "National Security" (terrorists might be able to raise more funds if they knew they could raise the stakes beyond our alloted ability to respond, they could catch us with our pants down!.) and after that, we might start seeing Orwellian reports like "Don't Worry, Everything is Fine" in lieu of any negative criticism of the government.
will you just look at this story!

now i'm willing to give up some liberties in order to feel more secure, but this example is simply ridiculous. it's like an exaggerated example from a left wing pot-paranoia scenario. this guy wasn't hauling a machine gun, or 4 sticks of dynamite, or a copy of the anarchist's cookbook, or a leaky envelope, or 12 vials of golden fluid ala 12 monkeys, but a simple collection of ideas. a fantasy. a tale. it is not the place of the national guard to ask "why are you reading this?" if the person consents to a search and the book and the reader come up clean, then it's not thier place to even raise an eyebrow at the content of the paperback. i'm starting to get scared here. I was in the military, and i know that very few of the active duty personnel i ever met were fit to try and preserve or respect my civil liberties.
In the course of discussion about the media and the WTC attacks, a friend said:

when OJ ran and there was a car chase, all
the sitcoms addressed that cultural node by
inventing a fictional event in the fictional
world that would occur on all the different
shows - this event seems too large to deny -
right now, the towers are simply being "written out" - i would have liked them to stay until
fictional world time caught up with real world
events - i don't think you'll see "the attack"
episodes of any show - they'll just change the
NY paintings in the sitcom windows, and edit
the stock footage of NY that incuts segments.

Now that time has caught up with us... I've seen attack episodes of West Wing, First Watch, and that series debut that happened to (coincidentaly) have been made about FDNY's Station 2 which lost a bunch of members. "What they hey, we had it in the can." the producer probably said to his wife.

Sex in the City, which uses a shot of the sun falling across the two towers in it's opening, seems to be up in the air about what they are going to do with the opening sequence. (Personally, they should leave it in. It's a nice shot.) Friends seems to have avoided the issue by deflecting all questions with rachel's pregnancy, a wise move since in that idiom, the pregnancy and the hubbub about the show would be a distraction. But then, another person i knew always thought they were completely out of touch with reality. For example, how many coffee bars in New York have ONLY white people visiting the? And of course, at least one network is reportedly planning a series concerning a young couple that meet when their respctive spouses are killed in the WTC attack. <newscaster voice> "It's a romantic comedy!" </newscaster voice> (Tasteless? you're soaking in it.)
In December/November, my wife Mystery made a few predictions. She said, that if Geo. W. Bush became our president:
  1. The stock market would plummet
  2. the resulting plunge in tech stocks would cost me my job at Amazon.com
  3. we would immediately forget about saving the budget surplus for social security
  4. and we would become involved in a war in order to distract the country.
Since all of these have now come true, I've asked mystery not to make any more predictions.

Subject: The Expression of Grief and the Power of Art

 Dear Friends and Colleagues,

In the hours and the days following the tragedies in New York, Washington
and Pennsylvania, we (as artists) have been transported to a new world - an
unfamiliar territory that will take us a long time to learn and travail.

I am writing to you with a heavy heart. Having experienced the tremendous
damage of two earthquakes in California (and the loss of lives associated
with them), and now with these terrorist attacks, I can only say that it
will take a great deal of time, support from our family and friends, and
the comraderie of our communities to be able to one day be able to continue
 with our lives.

I have heard from many of you about how it will be impossible to continue
working as an artist in this new world. About how meaningless and
insignificant our lives are. About how our future endeavors ultimately
will mean nothing in the wake of this horror - thousands of lives lost -
the hundreds of thousands of families affected - and the whole world who
sense of security has been shattered.

It would be an even greater tragedy, and a more devastating loss, to see
each you disappear from our world like those at the WTC and the Pentagon.
My livelihood, my inspiration and my worth as artist comes from the work
that you do and from the support you have given me. Please do not hesitate
to reach out for help in this time of grief to anyone - including those of
 your greater artistic family.

Perhaps, as Aristotle surmised, that in our work we will be able to express
our grief and sorrows publicly, allow our audiences to share with us our
experiences, and hope that a catharsis will emerge within each of us, and
thus begin the process of healing.

We will struggle to find the words and the means to define this event. But
as the history of art and artists has shown, we have the ability to express
'the unnamable' - in same ways that those that came before us were able to
 do.

For me, it began on Wednesday night, when I begin teaching an acting class
to a group of students, many of whom had never taken theatre-related course
in their lives. In the hours before the class began, I was ill at ease and
uninspired. I do not remember having a single idea as to how to begin -
nor the passion within me to do so.

And yet, once I met these new students one-by-one, it all suddenly changed.
They were there to change their lives, to find a new mode of expression
and to redefine their self-worth as individuals. I was there to support
them, to teach and to inspire them in ways I was inspired when I began my
first acting class. And it turned out to be one the best teaching
experiences of my life. I regained a sense of what my role is ....

I have always felt that it is my responsibility as a citizen, and as an
artist, to illuminate our humanity and to share those stories with our
communities and, by extension to the world at large. If anything, the
events of the past week have made me become even more resolute as citizen
and artist: to aid the process of healing, to council those in need, and
persevere in my life and work in the face of despair.

I implore you, each and every one of you, to not give up or give in to the
terrors of the world. Reach out, help in any way you can, and continue the
good work we have set out to do. Yes, it has and will forever be, a
different world. Our systems of beliefs (social, political, religious,
etc.) have been stripped from us. But we still have our lives, our
responsibilities, and our families and friends who will need us more than
 ever.

We shall endure. Keep the faith, and may God bless you each and every one
of you, your families and your friends.

 Peace and Love,

 Tlaloc Rivas

note to myself:

read this.
Through all of the chaos of the last week, CBS kept the Big Brother Houseguests confined in thier LA warehouse. They informed the guests of the bombings, but only fed them the basic facts. They have not been told of the deathcounts, or even the fact that the President and the current Administration treats the aftermath as a "state of war." Although Monica may have lost her cousin, they kept her in the relative dark about the situation, only allowing her occasional contact with the producers. they may of may not have allowed her to speak with her family, (probably not,) and she was under considerable stress. Big Brother gave the guests a Monopoly board, and Nicole and Will did an outstanding job of keeping Monica distracted with a two day Monopoly marathon.

CBS has preempted the show on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and kept the game in a state of suspense until Saturday. When the appeal of Monopoly grew tarnished, the Big Brother producers then allowed the three guests to choose thier favorite movies (at least three a night,) which they were then shown on the house's entertainment center. They finally held a taping on Saturday, treating the guests as if they were still "live" and the game was allowed to progress. The Head of Household was determined, and one of the three was evicted. There will be a semi-live show on Tuesday or Thursday, when they will show the earlier competition, and the final decision, where the winner will be awarded the $500K.

CBS has shown considerable bad taste, In My Opinion. (That's what "IMO" means, when you see it in a comment, for those of you who may not know (mom). IMHO is "In My Humble Opinion.") They have more of a vested interest in thier regular programming, which resumes this week, than they do in Big Brother, which garners more ratings than re-runs, but not nearly as much as their regular seasonal programming. If network executives decide that they can't put the big Brother cast up against competition from the other network's regular Thursday night powerhouses, and they pre-empt the show, how will they be able to justify this pointless meddling in these three lives? I enjoy watching the show under normal circumstances. Normally I see no problem enclosing people for entertainment value in this type of situation when their lives are relatively secure, but to entrap them in this house and cut off contact at a time when they really should be with thier families, is pretty much crossing the line. Especially when the stakes are simply nothing more than a glorified game show. The "Game" should have been suspended, or rescheduled, just like Major League Baseball. On Tuesday, the pot should simply have been split, and they should have closed up shop on the show. Asking people to compete in trivial meaningless competition while the fundamental structure and freedoms of our society are threatened, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

questions

everyone is caught up in revenge right now, but i've abandoned that train, and won't argue it any longer. what happens happens. Now i keep thinking about some of the things i keep hearing on the news. Mainly that "things in america will never be the same."

Now let's give some thought to that. I wonder how far that will go? right now i think people mean thier sense of safety, their pride, their complacency... but how far does it need to go? Are we saying that we want to prevent this type of thing in the future at all costs?

From my own past experiences, i can tell you that attempts of this kind are made all the time. Generally they are thwarted far too early to even hear about them on the news. But the truth is, because we have so many freedoms, so few restrictions, people are free to do a broad variety of illegal and dangerous things, and not get caught. We have a number of safegaurds in place, and in this case, it wasn't a matter of those NOT working, but a matter of the murderers not needing to confront any of those existing safegaurds.

No handguns were used, so no firearm background check was performed. No complex devices were taken onto the plane, and the knives used were within the allowable size limits set by the FAA, (and they probably didn't need to use those at all, usually the threat of a bomb would have been enough to ensure the amount of compliance required by the highjackers.) So the metal detectors did not go off. There were no explosives, so no federally mandated "micro-taggants" used to lace components for home-made explosives will show up in the bomb residue. The men were added to an INS watch list, which should have prevented their entry into the country, but they may have simply flew into canada and crossed the open border. Or they may have simply been here all along. My point isn't to argue the small details, and ask "What if we ban all knives on commercial airlines?" but to simply say that the main weapon used in this attack was determined men verses regular people doing thier daily rote jobs. And little else other than dumb luck.

So what controls can we institute against that? What enemy can we kill? What freedoms can we do away with? Are we just as helpless as we were on Monday night? What will we change? and will we still be "America the Free" when we are done? What freedoms will you relinquish? And will it be enough?
by Tom Stoppard:

PLAYER: Well, no, I can't say it is, really. We're more of the blood, love and rhetoric school.

GUILDENSTERN: Well, I'll leave the choice to you, if there is anything to choose between them.

PLAYER: They're hardly divisible, sir -- well, I can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and I can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and I can do you all three concurrent or consecutive, but I can't do you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory -- they're all blood, you see.

GUILDENSTERN: Is that what people want?

PLAYER: It's what we do. (Small pause, He turns away.)

and that's all i have to say about that. back to the normal business of my life, all further inquiries shall be directed to this entry. come what may.
