in other news, two internet annoyances, relating to a comment i was trying to make ondagoski's entry about yakuza movies.
1) while looking for the isbn number of an out of print book (the hollow doll) on amazon.com, i've come to find that the content of the books are now searched automatically, as well as the title. Since amazon lists books by availability, there were 40,000 listings of in print books that have nothing like "the hollow doll" in their title, but instead feature the words "the" , "hollow" and "doll" within a page of each other in the content, prior to listing the out of print book containing the ACTUAL title "the hollow doll." it makes amazon less of a destination for me, since a lot of what i use it for is refreshing my rusty memory for titles and books.
(aside: won't i make a GREAT grumpy old man? Dear Amazon.com... I would like to complain about the shade of yellow that you are using for your penis-logo... It reminds me of the sarin gas that Saddam used to put in my cornflakes. Makes my eyes tear up just a lookin at it. Sincerely, Old Fart.)
2) the japanese parliament is called the Diet. (pronounced Dee-Yet) It is impossible to verify the Romanji spelling of this, since entering "Japanese Diet" into a search engine brings back lots about green tea and sushi, but NOTHING about their parliament. Interestingly, mis-spelling "Diet" as "Deit" brings back results from people who've made pages about green tea and sushi, but can't spell.
