i had a dream where i went to see a play in which rebel without a cuase had been deconstructed into a version of hamlet. lots of parallels there...but there are some things that upon waking, i realized may not work, or maybe they work on some other level...
for some reason the idea of the two intertwined has been bothering me... certain points are sticking, and when that occurs, usually there is some point trying to get made in there...
what crime is the equivalent of claudius' usurping the throne? who has wronged james dean's character, and what is his revenge?
i can see how the jimmy dean character's father actually plays the role of gertrude, and how sal mineo plays the role of ophelia, but i don't see where natalie wood figures. much too active to be rosencrantz or guildenstern...
i finished reading american psycho... i think there might have been a point in there somewhere, but i'm not quite sure what it was. i've never read such an intentionally vapid book. marvelously vacant, at turns the spiegel catalog, gq, slasher flick, and penthouse forum... essentially a 80's consumerist fantasy in which excessive appetite entirely eclipses soul... a scathing satire that seams to imply that an entire era was essentially sociopathic.
interestingly, it has an oddly homophobic subtext, the meltdown occurs after the dominant male figure in bateman's group (Price, i think was his name) disappears, and things stabilize when he re-appears...
i also read the bagvad gita... which i was supposed to read last year about this time for a course i took. it was interesting, the whole story of vishnu talking arjuna into killing people when arjuna doesn't want to do it. basically there were lots of reasons, the most compelling being that he wouldn't really be destroying them, since they would be reborn, and it was clearly thier fate to be destroyed, since vishnu willed it... but i think that vishnu got a bit sidetracked.
