TRANSCRIPTION OF DIARY

Today was an agreed upon down day between me and Mystery (Sounds like we negotiated it during the cold war, doesn't it? -srz) We didn't sleep in though, we got up at 7:30 AM and rode out to the Trionfale arket, to get things for a picnic (or as a little girl at the grocery store said the other day, "a peek-neek.") We got a bunch of vesuvio tomatoes on the vine, some fresh mozzerella, a few Ciabatta rolls, a bunch of Rughetta, olives, and some strawberries, peaches and cherries, all for less than €15. We took this back to the Lancelot and made some really incredible sandwiches, and then slept until the cool part of the day, at 3:30 or so. It was still easily 80 Plus degrees.

We took the 75 bus from the Colloseum into Trastevere (taking our cue from the little Italian ladies, we stood in the shade of the bus sign that illustrated the routes. It works! -srz) Trastevere is a little residential area in Rome, and we strolled around for a few hour topping it off at 7:30PM with dinner at Dar Poeta, which was independantly recommended to Mystery and me by every guidebook and person we spoke to. It has, reportedly, the best pizza in Rome. You can't throw down a challenge like that to a serious chow hound like me, so we had to give it a try. They say that the wait is horrific, but we showed up right at opening time (7:30) and were sat right away. (The guide books say to come at 8:30, we assume to let the oven get warmed up, but the staff had fired it up to eat their own meals at around 6:30 7-ish, so the oven was already going. -srz) The pizza did not dissappoint. The highlight was its incredible crust, which was simply impossible to describe, and very delicious. Mystery had a pizza with roasted eggplant and ricotta salata, I had one with mozzerella, rughetta, and fresh tomatoes (deja vu, I know, it's our first order from Pizzerria F'illi Russo, on Day one, but it's a good combo, sue me.) After that, we had an amara, Mystery had a Lemoncello and an espresso. They were both very, very good.

We then walked the "Night Walk through Rome" once more, this time, at night (Like we are supposed to. -srz) We saw the Trevi fountain once more, threw in the requisite coin, took blurry pictures, and off we went. The Pantheon is on that stop, as is the Camp Di Fiori and the Piazza Navona. The Piazza's four rivers fountain was being restores after serious water damage over the centuries, but I was able to take a few pictures. The Pantehon was impressive, it is the Pantheon, and not much else needs to be said. So at the end, we walked home, (See how quickly Rome becomes 'home?' Four days. -srz) from the Pantheon to the Colloseum, which was recommended as being a short jaunt, but was actually a pretty long haul.

Anyway, we are back at the lancelot now (not really, that was a month ago yesterday! -srz) our down day has turned into another long 7000 calorie burning walk fest. Oh! Completely forgot! Our trip out to Trastevere begin with a jet up the hill behind the Colloseum to the "Church of St Peter in Chains" which holds the sculpture by Michaelangelo of Moses (the one with the horns.) It was another case of "Pay to light this up, Pilgrim." But the lighting in the church itself was too good, and you could get good pictures with or without the light. So that was today, tomorrow we will try again for a lower energy day. We will see how we do. One thing is for sure though, we have a lot of fruit to eat.
