We stole this from the internets, precious, yes we did:
I always saw Hobbes as sort of a Superego/Ego combo to balance Calvin's unrestrained Id, and this battle between what we want to do, and what we have to do, is part of the charm of the strip, because we can all see it in ourselves. The knowledge and subversion of this device from the original strip makes this little deconstruction and commentary on the over-medication of children sting a lot more, since it reverses this Id/Ego role in the two characters.
