Some thoughts on Dubai ports world.

I really wonder about this one. Bush and co. have made so much political hay out of exploiting the perceived situation vs the real situation. They took us to war because they were able to rely on the fact that so much of the population had made the following calculation:

Terrorism = Them Frikken A-rabs.

And then now they think, that the same "mayor of Truck-ville" heartland white folks are going to abandon this thought in favor of:

Free Trade = Them Frikken A-rabs.

But the real clincher is how this issue has portrayed the Democrats. They should just shut up and let the Administration hang themselves. The Bush folks have clearly made some backroom deal, some swap of port control for use of bases and funding from the UAE, and 34% approval rating or no, the adminsitration is going forward cause the check cleared. They are going to lose their base, and the role of the Dems here is to let them, but instead, "Liberals" are now attacking the issue with Conservative isolationist arguments, which makes them look, well, like hypocrites.

It's odd to see the party of fair play frothing at the mouth, and spouting real Lou Dobb's style xenophobia over the issue. Especially Hillary Clinton. I'm going to stay liberal here, and say that there really isn't any reason to reject this deal. (My earlier post wasn't against the deal, but against the hipocracy of the Bush admin's cronyism.) Dubai won't be taking over the role of the Coast Guard, or adversely affect the security that is already in place. And although 2 of the 9-11 hijackers came from the UAE, bunches of the rest of them came from Saudi Arabia, and we let them control our energy markets. Anyhow, despite all this, and the quite clear fact that this deal will eat itself, Hillary has been stumping hard against it, 1 saying:
"Our port security is too important to place in the hands of foreign governments,” Clinton said, in a statement posted to her web site. (srz: Hillary has a website?) "I will be working with [New Jersey] Senator [Robert] Menendez to introduce legislation that will prohibit the sale of ports to foreign governments.”
All while Bill was talking to Dubai on how they can spin the whole deal. 2 (Gotta love the Clintons, no matter what, they are gettin paid mofo.)
