AKA Steffan beats a Joke to Death, Buries it in Shallow Grave.
Milk and Cheese were (are) cathartic creations of Cartoonist Evan Dorkin. They began life as a bad joke on a cocktail napkin and evolved into a raw expression of Dorkin's Id. Milk and Cheese comes out in a collection every few years or so, and they usually follow a formula. Milk and Cheese notice something: Declare it bogus: Beat the tar out of it: Get drunk. Not Shakespeare, hell, not even Stephen King. This is primordial rage, HULK SMASH!, the stuff of the hypothalamus.
Anyhow, the Rove pic above is an alteration of the final panel of this classic, and perhaps ultimate, Milk and Cheese strip, in which (in a sort of Atom Egoyan sort of way) escalating violence is explained by its perpetrators by the simple repetition of the name "Merv Griffin." Looking back on the comic (from 1991,) it seems sad now, especially since its underlying philosophy has been co-opted as the "Bush Doctrine." (Simply sub "9-11!" for "Merv Griffin!" and you've got the idea.)
SO! Turnabout is fair play! When I saw the press going after Rove like (Well, like Milk and Cheese going after hippies,) I thought it might be funny to sub in Rove's name for Merv's, since Rove never fails to froth my milk (Metaphorically speaking.)
