Why i like "Changing Rooms"

saint_monkeyit's magical really, maybe in that walt disney way. maybe in that "it never was, but it ought to have been" way, maybe in that "Cinderella" way... An omnipotent force in the guise of the BBC comes swooping down on your humble unvarnished life, and they make subtle changes, and a few modifications, to the things that you love, and based on what they know about you, they buy or give you all new things. (Not to exceed a thousand pounds, however, we are on a budget.) It makes a coach from your pumpkin, footmen from your mice, a prom dress from your drapes, and The Death of Sardonopolis from your Ikea festooned Bedroom.
They know that people come on this show because they want things to be different. Hell, they probably want thier whole life to be different, but given the imposibility of effecting THAT change, they settle for making the place where they live different. And the BBC isn't above playing Willy Wonka to that idea, (more on the link between Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Dante's Inferno in a future entry...) They make a thousand pound approximation your dream.... Morocco, an Aubrey Beardsey Illustration, Tangiers, a 50's Diner. No dream too odd. They indulge your dangerous fantasy.... They bring the thing you dream of, your larger than life un-reality.... into the reality that you have settled for. They can make your kitchen into a pale MDF imitation, a mockery . Where you can sit and eat cous-cous and olives and sun dried tomatoes and sigh.
