Essentially the commenter boiled it down to utility. Jeans are built for utility, to get stains, holes, etc, on them, and still be worn.
Dress clothes, like slacks, are ruined if they are torn or get stains on them.
So jeans are not professional because they could indicate that actual manual labor is being done.
