this is a print i recently accomplished for a nationwide print exchange. i am very happy with this print, something that is very rare. printers tend to feel undervalued as artists, simply because we can make multiples, and we often feel that our patrons don't appreciate that each print in a series takes as much time and thought as a full bore, one-of-a-kind painting by a painter. So printers tend to trade prints with other printers, this way one can amass a nice collection of high quality work, while distributing your pictures to like minded and appreciative individuals. and-- since you are sending your work out to other printers, you try to impress them with some neat printing trick. In the case of this print, you can see the "plate" marks quite clearly. any printer knows that the image is etched into the plate, the ink gets held into the etched lines, and then sucked out by soaked paper. BUT, the red portion of the image extends beyond the edges of the plate, which means that some other method was used to print those lines. (In this case, silkscreening.) BUT, all other print methods require dry paper, AND the two images are in close registration, (meaning they are lined up) something that is nearly impossible when dealing with mixed methods, since they are printed on entirely different apparatus. Most printers will tell you flat out that you can not mix water based screenprinting and oil based etching because of these difficulties.
