Really briefly, this singularity is the idea that man will engineer an intelligence which will become so far superior to us that it leaves homo sapiens in the dust, thinkingwise. We won't be able to understand it, we will either be its housepets, or just plain in the way. This may happen in one of two ways, our engineered intelligence is genetic, (we create supermen with our knowledge of the genome, (Stephen Hawking has postulated this.) or upload ourselves into computers,) or artificial, (we build HAL, or upload ourselves into computers.)
