Through all of the chaos of the last week, CBS kept the Big Brother Houseguests confined in thier LA warehouse. They informed the guests of the bombings, but only fed them the basic facts. They have not been told of the deathcounts, or even the fact that the President and the current Administration treats the aftermath as a "state of war." Although Monica may have lost her cousin, they kept her in the relative dark about the situation, only allowing her occasional contact with the producers. they may of may not have allowed her to speak with her family, (probably not,) and she was under considerable stress. Big Brother gave the guests a Monopoly board, and Nicole and Will did an outstanding job of keeping Monica distracted with a two day Monopoly marathon.
CBS has preempted the show on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and kept the game in a state of suspense until Saturday. When the appeal of Monopoly grew tarnished, the Big Brother producers then allowed the three guests to choose thier favorite movies (at least three a night,) which they were then shown on the house's entertainment center. They finally held a taping on Saturday, treating the guests as if they were still "live" and the game was allowed to progress. The Head of Household was determined, and one of the three was evicted. There will be a semi-live show on Tuesday or Thursday, when they will show the earlier competition, and the final decision, where the winner will be awarded the $500K.
CBS has shown considerable bad taste, In My Opinion. (That's what "IMO" means, when you see it in a comment, for those of you who may not know (mom). IMHO is "In My Humble Opinion.") They have more of a vested interest in thier regular programming, which resumes this week, than they do in Big Brother, which garners more ratings than re-runs, but not nearly as much as their regular seasonal programming. If network executives decide that they can't put the big Brother cast up against competition from the other network's regular Thursday night powerhouses, and they pre-empt the show, how will they be able to justify this pointless meddling in these three lives? I enjoy watching the show under normal circumstances. Normally I see no problem enclosing people for entertainment value in this type of situation when their lives are relatively secure, but to entrap them in this house and cut off contact at a time when they really should be with thier families, is pretty much crossing the line. Especially when the stakes are simply nothing more than a glorified game show. The "Game" should have been suspended, or rescheduled, just like Major League Baseball. On Tuesday, the pot should simply have been split, and they should have closed up shop on the show. Asking people to compete in trivial meaningless competition while the fundamental structure and freedoms of our society are threatened, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
