from the "you learn something new everyday" department.

Ghandi came up with seven sins that he considered "the deadly sins." rather than directly condemning any given emotion or action, (almost anything canbe forgiven given a certain set of circumstances) he rather condemned certain actions without certain controlling considerations. here they are:

Wealth without work
Pleasure without conscience
Knowledge without character
Commerce (business) without morality (ethics)
Science without humanity
Religion without sacrifice
Politics without principle

im not sure that once one is "enlightened" that enlightenment lasts forever.

i have often felt the feeling that i "understood" only to have it slip away. i can't believe that anyone, even buddha, knew all the answers all the time. i think that he wascapable of losing his enlightenment if he backslid too much. ghandi used to go to bed with young girls, to test his body and resolve, saying that if one wasn't constantly vigilant, one would backslide, and old habits could take over.

so i think that enlightenment is only good for a certain timeframe. the trick is realizing when enlightenment ends.
